Easy Ways to Overcome Chronic Headaches
Chronic headaches are a condition in which a person experiences a headache that lasts for at least 15 days in one month, for three consecutive months. Chronic headaches can be caused by various factors, such as stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, eye disorders, infections, inflammation, brain tumors, or excessive use of drugs.
Chronic headaches can be very disruptive to a person's quality of life and productivity. Therefore, it is important to know how to overcome them easily and effectively. Here are some ways you can try:
1. Drink enough water
Water is an essential fluid that the body needs to maintain the function of organs, including the brain. Dehydration can cause headaches by reducing blood flow and oxygen to the brain. To prevent dehydration, you are advised to drink at least 2 liters of water per day or according to your body's needs.
2. Rest your eyes
Chronic headaches can be triggered by eye disorders, such as nearsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia. These eye disorders can cause tired and tense eyes when looking at objects around them. To reduce headaches caused by eye disorders, you can rest your eyes every 20 minutes by closing your eyes or looking at distant objects for 20 seconds. You can also use glasses according to your doctor's prescription if necessary.
3. Stretch your muscles
Chronic headaches are often caused by muscle tension around the neck and head. Stretching the muscles can help relax those muscles and increase blood flow to the brain. You can stretch your muscles by moving your neck and head forward, backward, right, and left slowly. You can also move your shoulders up and down a few times.
4. Massage gently
Gentle massage can also help relieve chronic headaches by stimulating acupressure points around the head. You can massage yourself or ask someone else to massage the forehead, temples, behind the ears, neck, and shoulders with circular or gentle squeezing movements. This massage can be done for 10-15 minutes or until the headache subsides.
5. Use a cold or warm compress
A cold or warm compress can help reduce chronic headaches by controlling body temperature and reducing inflammation. A cold compress can be used for headaches caused by migraines or inflammation of the brain's blood vessels. A warm compress can be used for headaches caused by muscle tension or stress. You can use ice wrapped in cloth or a wet towel dipped in cold or warm water to compress the forehead or back of the neck for 10-15 minutes.
6. Take pain relievers
If the natural methods above do not work in reducing your chronic headaches, you can try taking pain relievers.
